  • Flash players launched

I am happy to announce that we have launched our new Flash player which is FREE for all customers using our Shoutcast services. This enables 99% of Internet users to tune in to

your stream without the need to download and install any additional software.

This has been activated on all servers, but only the premium network control panel has been updated with the links.

If you are on the premium network, then you can get your Flash link by logging in and going to ‘Shoutcast servers > Stream links & statistics’.

Value network (and premium) customers can still access their Flash stream by using the following format:
http://mixstream.net/stream-flash/[[SERVER]]:[[PORT]]

Where [[SERVER]] is the server name (not IP), for example usa1-vn or uk3-vn (don’t include .mixstream.net) and change [[PORT]] to your port number 9see the example below).

This is a new feature and is still being tested, so if you experience any problems then please open a support ticket with as much detail as possible about the problem you are having.

Planned: We will be offering a way to embed the Flash code onto your own web pages in the next week or so, this will not be announced by email so keep checking the ‘HTML/PHP

Scripts’ area in the control panel or check the forum announcements.

Live Demo:

http://mixstream.net/stream-flash/uk1-pn:8110

Limitations: Flash doesn’t work with AAC+ or NSV.

  • Cast Control license server down

It seems like the licensing server for Cast Control is down at the moment. This means that premium network customers will be unable to log in.

It’s hard to contact them at the moment because their support system is down, however I’ve sent them an email which may or may not reach them.

All hosts using Cast Control are having the same problem that we are so they will have the problem fixed soon.

  • VALUE NETWORK ONLY: Updated bandwidth policy
First of all, it is important to note that this does not affect any custmers using the Premium Network – we only have a Fair Usage Policy on the Value Network. Premium Network customers benefit from pure dedicated bandwidth (this basically means you can use 100% of your allocated slots 100% of the time), this has always been the case and always will :)

I have been working on the system that determines which servers are put in to the heavy users bandwidth pool and how long for. The new system will be introduced over the next week. This will not affect the vast majority of customers at all, if you haven’t noticed it before then the chances are you never will.

The way that the system works is that we have a scanner (called the Quality of Service, or “QoS scanner”) that runs every hour during peak time. This checks to see how much bandwidth each stream is using at the time the scanner runs.

The main changes are as follows:

“Peak Time” which is the hours that our QoS scanner operates has been reduced from 8AM-10PM to 2PM-11PM, this means that all servers have unmetered bandwidth for an extra 5 hours a day.

“Maximum pooled time” has been reduced from 48 hours to 5 hours. This means that when servers are added to the heavy users pool (Low Priority bandwith) they will remain there for no longer than 5 hours. This is a big reduction, previously servers were in the pool for up to 48 hours.

“High priority bandwidth” is now available to radio stations that need to sustain very high listener numbers without the expence of changing to the premium network. If purchased, none of the Fair Usage Policy will apply to your server. This is available at £3 per Mbps (for comparison, premium network accounts are the equivalent of just over £5 per Mbps). Your stream port will be set to the speed that you purchase. As you will be paying for a given amount of bandwidth and not slots, you may request as many listener slots as you like for no extra charge at any time and can stream at any bitrate that you choose.
(Please note that this makes no difference to uptime and general bandwidth quality. It simply stops you from being added to the bandwidth pool.)

This system works. The old scanner was slightly buggy and didn’t work all of the time, we also turned it off a lot. This is no longer the case.

You can check to see if you have been added to the heavy users list by logging in and going to ‘Shoutcast Servers’. Alongside each server, it will show the “Bandwidth Priority”:

High: You are subscribed to the high priority bandwidth and have no chance of being entered into the heavy users list.

Medium:
Your bandwidth priority is the same as normal, you may also see “1, 2, or 3 Warnings” – this means that your server has been logged as a heavy user but has no restrictions (bandwidth will become low priority after 3 warnings)

Low: Your server has been put into the heavy user bandwidth pool. This means that you share the same bandwidth as other heavy users on the server.

I understand that some people might not like the FUP, however it is clearly stated in the terms and conditions when you sign up (and always has been), we simply haven’t enforced it properly. Our bandwidth policy is flexible and we are happy to work with customers and take on board any comments that can help us to hit the right balance between providing large amounts of cheap bandwidth for heavy users while maintaining a good level of quality for light users and maximising the efficiency of each server.

Our bandwidth policy is located in our terms and conditions here https://secure.bellonline.co.uk/terms/V … st.htm#FUP

Why do we have a Fair Usage Policy?

BELLonline has a very clear FUP to ansure that customers using the value network can continue to receive a good service. The value network is for radio stations that may need to peak to high listener numbers and is not intended for large professional radio stations that have 100s of listeners logged on constantly. Sharing bandwidth between customers means that individual stations can peak to very high numbers while keeping costs very low for everyone. If you require dedicated/unmetered bandwidth on the value network then please get in touch for a customised price.

You may find that there are other shoutcast hosting companies that don’t have a FUP but are still very cheap. You will normally find that if you use too much bandwidth they will either suspend or terminate your server without notice or refund – this is something we hear about on an almost daily basis from customers moving from other hosts.

You are welcome to reply to this topic with any comments or suggestions.

  • New AutoDJ server

We will be adding a new server for the AutoDJ system to our network. This will be the first AutoDJ server based in the UK (the current ones are all US based).

New customers will be added to this server, however if for any reason any current customers would prefer to be based on a UK server (which in come cases may result in a more solid stream if the shoutcast server is UK based), then please open a support ticket requesting the move.

  • Customers using stream-music.net

Customers using stream-music.net (in particular tv3.stream-music.net) may find that our AutoDJ is unable to connect to their shoutcast server. We have investigated this and it seems like tv3.stream-music.net is refusing requests from the IPs that we use – we’re not entirely sure why this is but we have contacted them to see if we can get the issue resolved, however it is entirely in their hands to unblock our IPs.

This post will be updated once we hear back from them.

We have heard nothing from stream-music.net regarding their blocking of our IPs. We can only assume that they are not allowing 3rd party autodj services to connect to their servers.

We are offering all customers of stream-music.net one free month of shoutcast hosting, and after the first month we will price match them for the life of the account.

  • Shoutcast YP: USA1-PN

It seems like the subnet that one of our servers is on (USA1-PN) has been blocked from listing on the Shoutcast YP. This does not affect your stream but we will be getting in touch with Shoutcast to get the network unblocked.

This may or may not be a result of a customer on the server breaking the YP rules and this will be investigated, any customer breaking YP rules will be contacted. As Shoutcast bans the whole subnet, it could be a result of someone using a different host using the same datacentre as we use and is therefore beyond our control, but we will try to get everyone unblocked.

  • Value Network servers clean up – important info

We are currently cleaning up the servers from USA1-VN – USA4-VN and UK1-VN. This is because there are a lot of old accounts that are still active as well as servers belonging to resellers that are not paid up to date.

This will free up resources on the servers to ensure a more stable stream and better reliability.

There is a small chance that legitimate accounts will be deleted, particularly if you have an older account where you log in with a username rather than your email address. If this happens then please open a support ticket and we will restore your account.

Full backups have been taken before any accounts are deleted so no data will be lost.

  • New servers to be added to network

We are going to be adding new servers soon, one on the value and one on the premium network.

This should happen over the next few days and then new orders will be put on to the new servers.
